I've only recently discovered Jasper Fforde and can recommend THE EYRE AFFAIR and LOST IN A GOOD BOOK, its sequel. They are humorous S/F, Crime novels set in an alternative universe where fiction can overlap with fact. I prefer the series with Thursday Next as the heroine to the Nursery World series. Good website, too - Carol
Right they look 2 good reads for the future.

Might I suggest to others the Simon Scarrow books. The Eagle series , set in Roman times about a Centurion and his Optio, very good read.
Toppers,

If you have picked up the first of George Martin's books, you will not read anything else until you finish the series.
They are very, very good.

A Game of Thrones, Bantam Books, 1996
o A Clash of Kings, Bantam Books, 1999
o A Storm of Swords, Bantam Books, 2000
o A Feast for Crows, Bantam Books, 2005
Yup I nearly bought the lot but thought I would do the first and if I like it I'll buy the rest.
I also rather enjoyed the Engineer Trilogy by K.J. Parker.

Devices and Desires
Evil for Evil
The Escapement
any other books to suggest?
