I finally managed to fix the problem with the who's been online mod. Now, site visitors can see who all has visited the site within the last 24 hours at the bottom of the main forum index page.

Does the "Hide me from the Who's Online list" in the "Edit Options" section of User CP stop you from showing up in that list?

Not that I want to do that but some people may not want that info shown publicly.

I logged out, just now, to check it, and it appears that it hides you from everyone but site admins. It will list you in the number counted as having logged on during the preceding 24 hour period, but it will not otherwise reveal, as far as I know.
