What kind of war board game?
If the old school, hard core (or what I consider to be hard core, anyway), then you might want to give HexWar a chance. You play it via computer, but it's very much a war game, and you can play against a human opponent. Plus, it's turn based, so you both don't have to share the same schedules, in order to be able to compete against one another.

well many years ago I bought Ambush, but had no one to play with, I like the squad games by the look of them or any hex based war game....

Are you talking about Ambush by Victory Games?
If so, that is a solitaire game. You have someone to play it with right now!

I'm in the same boat with regard to getting any wargames played face to face. Limited (pretty much zero) opponents and now a baby have combined to lethal effect.
Luckily there are a now quite a number of tools and websites dedicated to assisting PBEM wargaming.
There are several 'virtual board' packages out there. Cyberboard and ZunTzu have been mentioned in other threads but there is also Vassal and Aide de Camp that I know of. I have only used Cyberboard and Vassal but there exists a large number of virtual games created for these.
Websites that support wargaming in some way include Wargameroom and ACTS, which provides card management and limited game implementations for many games in the CDG (Card Driven Wargame) genre - Twilight Struggle, Paths of Glory etc. I have played various games using ACTS and found it a very useful site.
Grimfinger also mentions Hexwar which I haven't tried yet but am curious to do so; if you fancy giving the free game (Napolean at War) a try then I am a willing opponent.

No problems!
I'm off for a long weekend tomorrow (back on Tuesday) so in the meantime you may as well register at the site and have a nosey round.
See if you can download the program and get it working - I don't recall it being to tricky - and we can pick up next week.
